Why is my Sub-Zero refrigerator not cooling?
Short answer
Two things narrow this before anyone arrives. First, where the unit is standing: a kitchen built-in, a garage second refrigerator and a patio beverage cabinet fail for genuinely different reasons in Poway, and the answer changes what we test first.
Why we start there
Second, what the freezer is doing. If it is still hard while the fresh food side has climbed, the costly answer is already off the table, because the two compartments are cooled by separate refrigeration circuits and a freezer at zero proves one of them is in good health. What remains on the fresh food circuit is a stopped evaporator fan, a defrost fault packing the coil with ice, an evaporator so iced that no air moves through it, or a condenser with no headroom left in the afternoon heat.
What happens next
The time of day pattern gets left out of most phone calls, because saying it out loud makes the appliance sound healthy. It is not. If the unit holds overnight and through the morning and only drifts warm from early afternoon, that is usually not a failed component at all, it is a cooling system with nothing in reserve once the room warms up. A condenser carrying a season of decomposed granite dust and brush pollen still has enough capacity at eight in the morning and has spent all of it by four. Same appliance, same fault, two completely different sets of readings depending on what time somebody happens to be standing in front of it. Tell us the pattern on the phone and it changes the first thing we open.
If the unit in question is in the garage, say so when you call, because both of the likely faults are ones the kitchen never sees. In summer the ambient out there is far above what the cabinet was rated for and the condenser never gets a recovery period, so it runs continuously and still loses ground. In winter the opposite: on a combination refrigerator-freezer the thermostat senses the fresh food compartment, and if the garage itself is cold enough that compartment stays in range without the compressor ever running. The refrigerator reads perfect, the freezer thaws overnight, and nothing at all is broken. That fault is not fixed with parts, and we would rather tell you that on the phone than after somebody has replaced a control board.
