Sub-Zero is what this business is named after, and in Poway most of it is built-in refrigeration that has stood in the same opening since the kitchen was fitted. What separates it from a good freestanding refrigerator is dual refrigeration: two entirely separate sealed systems, one serving the fresh food side and one the freezer, with no air passing between the compartments at all. That is not a sales line, it is the first thing that narrows a diagnosis, because a freezer still sitting hard while the refrigerator has climbed proves the expensive half of the machine is healthy before a single panel comes off.
Two things shorten the life of these units here and neither one is a defect in the appliance. The first is what the condenser is asked to breathe. Decomposed granite driveways, graded pads and dry hillside brush put fine grit in the air for most of the year, an easterly wind event drives it into every opening a house has, and on horse property there is chaff and bedding fiber in it as well. A grille pulls that through the coil all day long. The second is clearance. Plenty of these kitchens were built around a freestanding refrigerator and had a column fitted later, and where a soffit or an added cabinet run sits tight over the grille the heat has nowhere to go. The unit still works. It simply runs hotter every summer than the identical model three streets over, and eventually that difference arrives as a repair.

Viking undercounter fridge out in the patio kitchen, set into stone, kept losing ground every afternoon in August. He said the surround was still radiating heat back at nine at night and the grille down at ankle height was choked with granite dust. Cleared it, let it recover, no parts.
The wine cabinet had been drifting a couple of degrees warm on the top zone for months and I kept nudging the setting. It was the seal along the top of the hinge side, and the door had sagged a little under the weight of that custom panel. Not the disaster I expected.
