Three questions that tell you whether someone has worked on a built-in before

Three questions, asked on the phone before anybody is booked, separate a technician who opens built-in refrigeration every week from one who meets a unit like yours once a year. One: where does the condenser sit on my model, and will the unit have to come out of the cabinetry to reach it? Two: my freezer is still hard and the refrigerator side is warm — what does that already rule out? Three: what do you carry on the van for this model, and what would have to be ordered? None of the three is a trick, and all three are answerable in a sentence by anybody who does this work. What you are testing is exposure, not honesty. A competent general appliance technician who sees one built-in a year is not a bad person, they are simply working without the pattern recognition that makes this equipment quick to diagnose, and the difference shows up as a control board fitted to a machine whose fan had failed.

Question one: where the condenser sits, and whether the unit comes out

This is the fastest sorting question in the trade, because the answer is not the same across the range and somebody who works on these knows that without being told. On the full-height built-ins and on the refrigerator, freezer and wine columns, the machine compartment sits at the top, behind the grille above the doors, so the coil is cleaned above your head. On undercounter drawers, beverage centers and undercounter wine storage it is down at the bottom instead, behind the lower grille. What you want to hear is a technician who asks which model you have before answering, or who says plainly that it depends on the line and asks you to read the plate. What you do not want to hear is a plan to pull the refrigerator out into the room in order to get at the back, because this class of equipment is designed and built to be serviced in place: the coil is reached through the grille, both sealed systems are laid out for front access, and the interior panels come off where the unit stands. Dragging a built-in out of a tight surround risks the flooring, the surround itself, the water line at the wall and, on a panel-ready door, a custom front worth more than the repair. There are genuine reasons to move one. They are rare, and they should be explained before it happens.

Question two: the freezer is fine and the refrigerator is warm

This one separates people faster than any credential. On a Sub-Zero built-in the two compartments are cooled by two entirely separate refrigeration systems, each with its own evaporator, and no air passes between them at all — that is what dual refrigeration means and it is the reason a fresh food compartment can be warm while the freezer beside it is still hard. The answer you want names that architecture and then draws the right conclusion from it: a freezer holding at temperature proves that circuit is healthy, which takes the most expensive possible outcome off the table before anyone opens anything, and leaves the fault on the fresh food side — a stopped evaporator fan, a defrost problem icing that coil, a drifted sensor, or a condenser with nothing left to give in the afternoon. The answer that should end the conversation is anyone who starts talking about an air door or a vent between the two compartments, or who reaches straight for the compressor. They are describing a conventional refrigerator, which is a fine machine and not the one in your kitchen, and every step that follows will be aimed at the wrong half of the appliance.

Question three: what is on the van, and what has to be ordered

The honest answer to this is never a simple yes. A service vehicle carries the parts that fail most often across the models it sees — evaporator fan motors, defrost heaters and sensors, gaskets, ice maker modules, relays — and it cannot carry the several hundred components that could theoretically fail across decades of production. What tells you somebody knows the equipment is that they ask you to read the model and serial from the plate before answering, because that string identifies the generation of control board and the evaporator layout, and two units that look identical in a kitchen can take different parts. A technician who says the part will depend on what the diagnosis finds, and that anything model-specific gets ordered against the serial, is describing the job accurately. One who guarantees a same-visit fix before knowing what has failed is either carrying nothing specific or intending to fit whatever is on board. Ask, too, whether the parts are factory-approved for your model. Pattern components exist for most of what fails on these units, they usually run, and they usually reappear on the fault list within a season — which on an appliance built into cabinetry means paying for the same visit twice.

The questions that sound good and tell you nothing

Some standard questions do less work than people expect. Asking whether a company repairs Sub-Zero gets a yes from everybody, because every appliance company repairs everything on their website. Asking whether the technicians are certified is nearly meaningless without asking certified in what and by whom, since the phrase covers everything from a manufacturer training program to a refrigerant handling credential to nothing at all. Asking the price of a call-out tells you the price of a visit, not the price of the job, and the cheapest visit in town is frequently the most expensive repair. Manufacturer authorization is worth understanding rather than treating as a badge: it is a commercial arrangement between a brand and a service company, it is not a measure of individual skill, and where it genuinely matters is warranty work — if your appliance is young enough to still be inside the manufacturer coverage, particularly on the sealed system, call the manufacturer before you call anybody else, because who opens it can affect what remains covered. Better questions than any of those: how many of these do you see in a month, does the same person do the diagnosis and the repair, and what do you check before you check the compressor.

Red flags once somebody is standing in your kitchen

The phone call sorts most of it, but a few things during the visit are worth stopping for. A firm price quoted before any panel has come off is a guess wearing a number. A control board proposed as the first repair on a machine where nobody has yet measured a fan motor draw, a heater or a sensor is the single most common wrong repair on this equipment, because a board is expensive, hard to disprove and gets blamed for everything the electronics report. Refrigerant added to a system without locating a leak first is not a repair at all: a sealed system does not consume refrigerant, so if it is low then it went somewhere, and a top-up buys months and empties again. A technician who will not tell you the actual reading — the temperature at the coil, the resistance of the sensor, the current the fan is drawing — is asking you to buy a verdict rather than a diagnosis, and readings are the whole point of the visit. The last one is physical: the unit dragged out into the room without a reason given, without floor protection, and with the water line still connected.

What good looks like when the visit ends

A repair that was done properly leaves a paper trail you can use later, and this is the part owners of expensive equipment most often skip. The invoice should carry the model and serial of the appliance rather than just the word refrigerator, the readings that led to the diagnosis, the part number of anything fitted, and the terms covering both the part supplied and the labor to fit it. That combination is what lets the next technician — possibly years from now, possibly not the same company — start from where this one finished instead of paying to rediscover the same fault, and on equipment that regularly outlives two owners it is worth keeping in a drawer with the manual. It also protects you in the only argument that matters: if the same symptom returns in a month, the question is whether the repair failed or a second fault surfaced, and readings written down at the time settle that in a minute. A shop that hands you a receipt saying service call and a total is not necessarily a bad shop, but it has given you nothing to hold and nothing to hand on.

Answers before you call

Is a general appliance repair company automatically the wrong choice for a built-in?

No, and treating it that way is unfair to some genuinely good technicians. The variable is exposure rather than ability: someone who works on this equipment weekly recognizes a fault pattern in minutes that somebody meeting their second unit this year has to reason out from first principles. Ask the three questions. A general technician who answers them well beats a specialist who does not.

Should I use the manufacturer service if the appliance is still under warranty?
